How to look for the answer:
Read through the table of contents for your question. There is a code to the left of it (eg. "[1.0.3] How can I play MapleStory using Linux?", [1.0.3] is the code). Use your browser's "Find" feature (usually Ctrl-F, or Edit->Find...) and enter the code. You may have to click on "Find Next" again to get to the actual answer.
Before you post in this thread:
Well, you can't anymore. If the information provided here is not sufficient, or if it tells you to post further details, please create a new thread, but make sure that you mentioned the section you have followed in the thread. Otherwise, I will just redirect you back to this thread again, wasting more time to resolve the issue.

[1.0.0] General Questions
[1.0.1] How can I access MapleGlobal using browsers other than Internet Explorer?
Nexon has finally fixed their website to allow any browser. This is now left here as a "universal" way of visiting other websites which claims to require IE only. However, the exception to this rule is Microsoft's Windows Update website, which does indeed require IE to work properly.
OGM Spoiler!
There are four methods to do this. The first three methods have been thrown around so many times I don't even know who came up with it first.
*NEW* Due to the way Nexon works now, you must install UserAgent Switcher extension for any Mozilla-based solutions plus one of the following methods. Before accessing the website, go to Tools->User Agent Switcher->Internet Explorer 6.0 (Windows XP).
Simple Method #1:
Disable JavaScript (Tools->Options->Content in Firefox), but you'll loose some of the functionality. This option is sufficient for you to look at the notices, events, etc. You will also need to change the user agent, but it is beyond the scope of this FAQ, as there are no universal instruction associated with a "simple" way.
Simple Method #2 (Mozilla-based browsers only):
Install the NoScript extension. This is the same as disabling JavaScript, then, with a white list, enable JavaScript for certain sites. This allows you to grant/deny JavaScript capabilities to websites without having to manually change the settings each time you visit MapleGlobal. As above, this options limits you to viewing notices, events, etc.
Cheating Method (Mozilla-based browsers only):
Install the IE Tab extension. This loads the Internet Explorer objects and displays right inside the Firefox browser. Please note that you are just as vulnerable as using IE with this method, so keep your system patched up. Also, if you are having problems accessing the website using IE, you may likely have the same problems using this method.
Simple Method #3 (Opera browsers only):
Save the following as a .js file in notepad (Thanks to Rick for this script):
Code:
// ==UserScript==
// @include http://*.nexon.net/*
// @include https://*.nexon.net/*
// ==/UserScript==
window.opera.defineMagicFunction('checkParent', function () { return; });
window.opera.defineMagicFunction('loadframe', function () { return; });
window.opera.defineMagicVariable('IE_Version', function (cur) { return 6; }, null);
window.opera.addEventListener('BeforeScript', function (ev)
{
navigator.appName = 'Microsoft Internet Explorer';
navigator.plugins.length = 0;
}, false);
Head over to Tools->Preferences (no, not quick preferences).
Click on Advanced->Content, then "Manage site preferences...".
Click "Add..." and type "nexon.net" in the Site box.
Under "Scripting"tab, add the .js file that you've previously saved in step 1.
Under "Network" tab, change the Browser identification to "Mask as Internet Explorer".
Visit Nexon's website.
Downloads Method (any browser):
This is for people who just want the download links.
Advanced Method (all browsers that support proxies) (these are generic steps only):
Install a proxy on your computer that can modify web pages on the fly (eg. Proxomitron).
Configure the proxy to replace 'navigator.plugins.length' with '0' (zero).
Configure the proxy to remove 'document.location.href = "/Common/Explorer_Error.html";' (without the single quotes).
Configure the proxy to replace the header called "UserAgent" with "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)". This will identify yourself as using IE v6.0 running Windows XP.
Configure your browser to use this local proxy.
It is best if you make these modifications apply only to MapleGlobal (if the proxy supports it).
This method allows more functionality than the simple methods. Enables login, account modification.
Known bugs: Email of Inquiry's submit button doesn't work.
[1.0.2] How can I play MapleStory using a MacIntosh?
You must have an Intel MacIntosh. The older PPC processor will not work at all. Make sure you have a copy of Windows and a proper, non-OEM license (ie, things like HP, Dell, etc are OEM) before proceeding.
XOM: Seems to be outdated. The wiki still only lists the iMac 17", 20" and MacBook Pro has having no video card drivers. You might have better luck with Bootcamp instead (see below).
Pros: Free
Cons: Seems to be no longer updated? Need to reboot to Windows to play, then back to Mac OSX for other things.
Bootcamp:
Pros: Free
Cons: Need to reboot to Windows to play, then back to Mac OSX for other things.
Quick start:
Install Bootcamp.
Burn the drivers CD/DVD.
Reboot.
Install Windows.
Install drivers.
Install Windows games.
Play.
Parallels Desktop for Mac: Only v3.0 or above (announced 1 Jun 2007) has support for D3D, which is required for MapleStory to function.
Pros: Runs directly on the MacOSX desktop.
Cons: May be slow.
VMWare Fusion: Only beta 2 or above has support for D3D, which is required for MapleStory to function.
Pros: Runs directly on the MacOSX desktop.
Cons: May be slow.
VirtualBox: VirtualBox does not directly support Direct3D yet. However, through the use of WineD3D and VBox v2.10 or above, you can play.
Pros: Runs directly on the MacOSX desktop (called seamless mode).
Cons: May be slow.
Virtual PC: VPC does not support Direct3D, which is required for MapleStory to function properly.
[1.0.3] How can I play MapleStory using Linux?
You must have OpenGL working in your X in order for it to work properly. You will also have to install Windows within one of the following virtualized environment in order to play.
Bochs: Bochs does not support Direct3D. (As of v2.2.6)
QEMU: QEMU does not support Direct3D. (As of v0.8.0) However, with the help of VMGL, you should be able to play.
VirtualBox: VirtualBox does not directly support Direct3D yet. However, through the use of WineD3D and VBox v2.10 or above, you can play.
Wine: Currently, the problem is getting GameGuard/HackShield working properly. If your version of MapleStory does not use GameGuard/HackShield, you should still be able to play. Be sure to have the direct rendering working correctly in your X (glxinfo |grep -i "Direct Rendering").
Xen: Xen requires a powerful processor in order to run Windows. As of 3.0.2, it is possible, but requires that you have hardware support for Intel Virtualization Technology (found in Intel Pentium D processors and up), or AMD Pacifica technology. How the program works still eludes me, so don't ask me how to make it work.
[2.0.0] Fraps
[2.1.0] Fraps Errors
[2.1.1] "Fraps requires a processor with SSE instructions"
Your computer did not pass one of the minimum requirements: Requires an Intel Pentium 3, Pentium 4, or AMD Athlon, Sempron, or Opteron processor. There is no fix for this. You must upgrade or use another computer.
[2.1.2] "Error while unpacking program, code B1. Please report to author." or "General extraction error Location CS2"
Please start Fraps first before you run MapleStory.
[2.2.0] Fraps Problems
[2.2.1] I don't see the FPS in the corner of my screen/I can't record any movies in MapleStory
Make sure you are running at least v2.5.2. Any later versions are compatible with GameGuard, although I recommend you use the latest version. The image below shows you where to look at for your version of Fraps.
Also, make sure that you have started Fraps first before you run MapleStory.
There have been reports that only the full version works. There have also been reports that a later version works. These have been unconfirmed.
[2.2.2] The movie is too big. Is there a way to shrink it?
Please refer to the How to Compress Fraps to DivX thread.
[3.0.0] MapleStory
[3.1.0] MapleStory Errors
[3.1.1] "Failed in finding proper screen mode for Gr2D" or "error code: -2147467259 (Unspecified error)" (0x80004005)
This section would be helpful to you if:
you have reinstalled Windows recently on your computer;
you have never played MS on your computer before;
you are trying to run MS in a virtual machine (jump to [3.1.1.6] now);
This section does not apply to you if:
MS worked on your computer before but you have not reinstalled Windows between now and the previous time it worked;
MS worked on your computer before but due to a patch or a GameGuard update, it no longer works;
If the last two applies to you, I suggest you do some universal fixes right now: reboot, reinstall the client, redownload and reinstall the client, system restore to an earlier point where it does work, and/or email Wizet (but make sure you mention that MS worked previous to a patch or whatever event that made it not work). It also wouldn't hurt to try these sections, but you will have a lesser chance of getting it to work compared to the people these sections are written for.
[3.1.1.1] Collecting Video Card Information
The number one cause of this problem is that you have recently reinstalled Windows and it has no idea what video card you have. Windows is not all-knowing. It doesn't come with every single video card driver known to man. This will be most evident when you check the device manager (Right-click on My Computer->Properties->(2k/XP users should also click on the Hardware tab)->Device Manager) and there is no display adapter listed, it has a yellow exclamation mark for an icon, or it says "VGA compatible card" under display adapter.
You can find out what video card it is by downloading UnknownDevices (v1.2 preferred) (mirrors) and updated PCI list. Extract the EXE file from UnknownDevices.zip and place pcidevs.txt (not the one from the ZIP file) in the same directory as the EXE, then double-click on it. Give it a little while for it to load. If you have seen "VGA compatible card" in the device manager, you should also see something similar here, and also listing what the actual device is called. For example:
Code:
? Standard PCI Graphics Adapter
|--ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9000 Series (RV250)
|--Chip: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9000 Series (RV250)
+--Full Details
This says that my video card is ATI Radeon series, so I should download the Catalyst driver from ATI Tech (download instructions in [3.1.1.2]).
This one says that my video card is nVidia GF4, so I should download the ForceWare/Detonator driver from nVidia (download instructions in [3.1.1.2]).
UnknownDevices will also detect some other video cards as well. If it says you have an Intel Extreme Graphics, S3 Savage or UniChrome, or SiS Mirage, you should look for your motherboard CD, as they are most likely onboard video cards. If you have misplaced them, check the motherboard's download list for your model number. They will already have the appropriate drivers for your computer.
I tried running UnknownDevices in a brand-name laptop but it failed to start properly, so your mileage may vary. However, all brand-name computers come with CDs that include drivers for your model. If you have misplaced them, check the company's download list for your model number. They will already have the appropriate drivers for your computer. You can easily tell whether your computer is from a brand-name company. It will usually have the company's logo/name written all over everything that came with the computer package (keyboard, mouse, monitor, computer case, etc). Just in case you are not entirely sure, the brand-name computer companies are, but not limited to:
You should easily determine what manufacturer your video card came from, but it may be quite cryptic since it also contains other devices from your computer. If you can't find out, save the list (List->Save to file) and post the resulting text file here so I can have a look at it. Don't forget to surround the result in [code][/code] tags so that it retains the tabbed structure of the list. Otherwise, it is very hard to read.
[3.1.1.2] Downloading Popular Video Card Drivers
Due to the recent AMD/ATI merger, the interface has changed, which is quite similar to that of the nVidia. ATI Radeon and All-in-Wonder+Radeon series only (Catalyst)
Select the operating system you are running in the first box.
Select the type of product you have in the second box (most likely choices are All-in-Wonder [for people with the graphics card AND the tuner all on one card], and Radeon [for those without]).
Select the family of your video card. (IMO, they'll just lead to the same place anyway, as all Radeon cards use the same driver suite and all AiW cards use a slightly bigger driver suite, but for completeness, just choose the correct family.)
Click on the green "Go" button.
In the middle section of the page, download the "Option 1" package. If you are on dial-up and would prefer not to install the entire thing, at the very least, you will need the "Option 2" package.
Read the system requirements before you install it. There may be additional software that you need to install (eg: .NET framework). There are also "Installation Instructions" that you can follow and/or print out.
Hover your mouse over the "Download Drivers" and select "Download Drivers" in the menu that pops up.
Click on "Graphics Driver" in the first box.
Click on "GeForce and TNT2" in the second box.
Select the operating system you are running in the third box. Click on "Go" to continue to the next page.
Click on "Primary Download Site" or one of the mirror links under "US. English"
Scroll down the popup window and click on "Accept"
Installing the driver will be as easy as running the downloaded file and following the onscreen instructions.
[3.1.1.3] Enabling D3D support
You may have to manually enable hardware acceleration and D3D. This will be a must if you have installed on a Windows 2003 Server. The hardware acceleration can be accessed by right-clicking on your desktop->Properties->Settings->Advanced->Troubleshoot, and slide the Hardware acceleration completely to the right. The D3D settings can be accessed by Start->Run->type in "dxdiag"->Display, and click on "Enable" for DD and D3D. Check to make sure everything is working by clicking on "Test Direct3D". At a minimum, your computer must have the Direct3D 8 interfaces test working for D3D in order for MapleStory to start.
[3.1.1.4] Low Video Memory
If you have an integrated video card, your system memory is likely shared with the video memory. In my tests on the SiS 630/730 with an old MS client, I needed at least 4MB of video memory in order to successfully run the Direct3D 8 interfaces test (see [3.1.1.3]). This should translate to MapleStory requiring at least 4MB of video memory in order to play. The settings are in the BIOS, but details on how to change it is beyond the scope of this FAQ. Please check your motherboard's manual for further details. I can only give you one hint: "AGP Aperture Size" is not the setting you are looking for.
Does this mean that you should set it to 4MB and forget about it? No. In fact, I've played with 2MB (although dedicated) video cards long before my conducted test. By this trend, you may be required to have 8MB or 16MB minimum in order to play. You will need to experiment with this value yourself.
If you do not have an integrated video card, but you were able to determine that you have less than 4MB of video memory from the display properties, you may have to upgrade your video card.
[3.1.1.5] Old Video Drivers
If you have an old video card installed on an old operating system, you should try to find the updated drivers. On my old ATI Xpert 98 (RAGE Pro chip) with default installation of Windows 98SE, I was unable to start the Direct3D 8 interfaces test (see [3.1.1.3]). After updating the drivers, I was able to, and consequently MapleStory as well. However, as of this time, ATI no longer has downloadable drivers for these obsolete video cards. Your mileage may vary with other video card manufacturers.
[3.1.1.6] Unsupported Video Cards
If your operating system has already identified your video card, or if any of the above do not apply to you, it is possible that your video card does not support 3D acceleration, which is required for MapleStory. You will need to upgrade your video card.
The list of video cards that are known not to support D3D include:
Any video card below, but not including, ATI Rage Pro series
Any video card below, and including, nVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64
NeoMagic MagicGraph256ZX
Emulated hardware from Bochs (as of v2.4.1)
Emulated hardware from Parallels Desktop for Mac (up to v2.2; v3.0 and higher have D3D support)
Emulated hardware from Parallels Workstation for Windows (as of v2.22)
Emulated hardware from QEmu (as of v0.8.0, although with the help of VMGL, you will be able to do so).
Emulated hardware from Virtual PC (as of 2007 SP1)
Emulated hardware from VirtualBox (up to v2.0.6; v2.1.0 and higher have experimental support for OpenGL only; installing WineD3D allows D3D games as well)
Emulated hardware from VMWare Fusion (up to Beta 1; Beta 2 and higher have support for D3D)
Emulated hardware from VMWare Workstation (up to v4.5; v5.0 and higher have experimental support for D3D; v6.5 and higher have full support for D3D)
Please note that the above list is not exhaustive. This means that just because your video card is not listed above doesn't mean that it is a guarantee that your card supports D3D. Generally, if your video card says it fully supports DirectX 8 acceleration you can play MapleStory.
[3.1.2] "The dynamic link library dinput8.dll could not be found in the specified path"
This error message applies to Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/NT4/2k systems, as they do not come with DirectX 8 by default. Please download and install the latest version from Microsoft.
[3.1.3] "The procedure entry point GetRawInputDeviceInfoW could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll"
This problem may not show up at all now due to GameGuard blocking the file. Please see [3.1.7], then [3.1.2].
This error message also applies to Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/NT4/2k systems. You have previously encountered the missing dinput8.dll file problem and now you've taken upon yourself to solve this problem by searching for that one file on the web. Please remove this file now and install the latest DirectX.
[3.1.4] "Out of Range", "Video mode not supported", "Cannot Display Video Mode" or a blank screen (but you can still hear the music)
Your monitor refresh rate was not properly detected when you install and/or when you first start MapleStory. You should run the Setup program (Start->Programs->Wizet->Setup, or go to your MapleStory folder, which is currently by default at C:\Nexon\MapleStory, then double click on setup) and it will display a series of screens and ask whether you see it or not.
If it doesn't work, run it again, but this time lie to the first screen that you are able see (ie answer "No"), then "Yes" to the second screen. If that doesn't work, answer "Yes" to the third, etc. until you either encounter the message that says it ran out of screens to try, or you've found one that works.
[3.1.5] Other errors?
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the client. You may even want to redownload a fresh client just to be sure.
[3.1.6] I got some weird error message patching MS!
Autopatcher is not responding, or a "425 Can't open data connection" error message
If you have a software firewall, you must allow the autopatcher to act as a server, as the program requires an incoming connection. (Configuring your firewall is beyond the scope of this FAQ.)
If you have a generic router, look around the settings to find anything related to FTP, particularly options named "Active FTP".
550 Invalid User
This is a problem with the Akamai servers. Use these instructions to clean up any cached information and try again.
Close the autopatcher. (Use the task manager to kill it from the processes tab.)
Start->Run..., type in "cmd" for WinNT4/2k/XP/2k3/Vista or "command" for Win98/98SE/ME. Don't include the quotes.
In the black box, type in "ipconfig /flushdns". Again, no quotes.
Close the black box. Try running Maple Story again.
550 /Maple/patch/patchdir/00033/Version.info: Not a directory.
If you have a generic router, look around the settings to find anything related to FTP, particularly options named "Active FTP".
Your version of the game is too old to use the patch. (applies only on clients patching from v0.18 to v0.19)
Go to your Maple Story folder (default C:\Program Files\Wizet\MapleStory).
(Don't forget the [dot]'s should be replaced with real dots .)
My manual patcher hangs at _________.
This usually means that the file is corrupted. Please download the full version from the website.
Please check here for further details.
My auto patcher hangs at _________.
This also means that the file is corrupted. If you are sure that you have the latest version installed, delete the following files from your MapleStory folder:
[3.1.7] I'm getting an error message in another language when I start:
This is due to the windowed mode file (d3d8.dll) in your MapleStory's folder. Please remove it before you start the game.
Also, if you have encountered the missing dinput8.dll error message and downloaded it off the Internet, you must remove it. Review [3.1.2] for the only fix in your situation.
You should also verify that the only files contained in your MapleStory folder are the ones that came with the installation program, GameGuard's folder, and your screenshots. Anything extra can easily cause this error message to occur.
The MapleStory folder should contain only these files:
GameGuard folder

Files guaranteed to cause this message to occur:
d3d8.dll
dinput8.dll
[3.1.8] Gr2D_Dx8: Direct8.1 not found
(idea adapted from Arkaze)
Check whether you have the file called d3d8.dll in your %WINDIR%\system32 (you will need to type this into the address bar of the Windows Explorer). If you don't, you should use the following list in the order specified to get it back (you only need to do one of these):
Check in the %WINDIR%\system32\dllcache folder.
Insert your Windows installation CD into your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Check in the D:\i386 (where D: is your CD/DVD-ROM drive) for a file called d3d8.dl_.
If it exists:
Start a command prompt (Start->Run..., type in "cmd").
In the black window, type in
Code:
expand -r "D:\i386\d3d8.dl_" "%WINDIR%\system32"
Search your hard disk for a file called d3d8.dll. It should be around 1MB in size (1,179,648 bytes if you are using the 32-bit English Windows XP). If you find it, copy it to %WINDIR%\system32.
Search your hard disk for a file called d3d8.dl_. If you find it, use the following instructions to extract it:
Start a command prompt (Start->Run..., type in "cmd").
In the black window, type in

[3.2.2] I can't get Manji to talk to me about the level 45 quest! (adapted from SW.net members)
Ditto. Complete the Maya quest (level 15) first.
[3.2.3] I can't get ______ to talk to me about the level __ quest!
Check the quests at Hidden Street. The NPC you want to talk to may be waiting for you to complete an earlier quest first, even if you haven't initiated it. The exception is the event-based quests (Cody in Henesys, Ria of Kerning, etc.), which means you're too late to do those quest now, since they are limited to a certain period of time.
[3.2.4] I can't get Shumi to give me my level 40 rewards. She kept saying that I don't have the room, but I do! (adapted from SW.net members)
The reward for the level 40 quest is 1 scroll for shoe for speed and 30 elixir, both of which are categorized as "Use" items. Please check under that tab and clear some room. You will require two empty slots.
[3.2.5] Are there any troubleshooting tips for lagginess?
Use the following list to find the source of the problem. Please note that this troubleshooting list is for network-related lags. Network lags usually have symptoms like needing to hit 3000+ on a snail and it still doesn't die, HP/MP pot delay, supportive skill delay, monsters running on the same spot, etc.
Check if it is your software firewall: If you have installed a software firewall, check to make sure it is not the one slowing your connection. Disable it, then run MS. If that helped, you should look for a different software firewall that uses less resources.
Check if it is the P2P programs: LimeWire, eMule, eDonkey, Overnet, Sharazza, iMesh, WinMX, BitTorrent, (uh... what else?) are the number one contribution to any lag and/or slowness you experience in any Internet-related programs. If you share your Internet connection with somebody else, make sure they are also not running these programs. If you cannot control what other people are doing on the network and you own the router, consider investing in a gaming router. You will then need to find the IP and/or port numbers to make it work (see a question below). If you don't have the money for the router or if you don't have control of the router, you will have to negotiate with them to allow you some time to play MS.
Check if it is your router: Ping your router (see the mini question below). They usually have an IP address of 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, 192.168.2.1, etc. If all the ping times are not consistent, it might not be a good router or there is something else causing the inconsistency (see P2P problems above). You should also ping a high-capacity website once with the router, once without (connect your computer directly to the modem), and once more with the router. If your router ping average is much higher than without it, it may also indicate a problem with the router.
Check if it is the wireless (does not apply to Portable Internet subscribers): If you are connecting to MapleStory using a wireless network connection, try not to use it for a moment. Compare the ping times on your access point/router with the wired and wireless on the same computer. If there is a significant difference in response time (with the wireless being slower in responsiveness), it is likely that your area is saturated with 2.4GHz devices that interferes with the wireless network (Known 2.4Ghz devices include, but not limited to: other wireless networks, cordless phones using 2.4GHz frequency but does not claim "wireless network friendly", microwave ovens, bluetooth devices). Try going into the access point's or router's settings and change the channel to one of the following and try again: 1, 6, 11. Unfortunately, the other numbers will still receive interference and is not recommended for long-term use. If none of the channels work, you might have to use the wired network to play, or invest in the 802.11a wireless devices since it uses a different frequency.
If you are using Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet Service: Check this thread for more troubleshooting tips. Update: Welp, that thread has been deleted. I may have some instructions written up again in the future if it is necessary, but for now, just keep going with the next one on the list.
Check if it is your ISP: Ask around in your neighbourhood. If they are using the same ISP and are also experiencing the same problems (well slow responsiveness on high-capacity websites, etc. Doesn't necessarily have to be MapleStory), there is a high chance that it is the ISP's fault. Try pinging several high-capacity websites. If the averages are all consistently bad, this is a good indication of ISP's fault. You can also try external tools like Line Quality test by DSL Reports (free registration required, as long as you don't use tool points). It will provide you a report on your IP address. Please also note that if you have a router or a software firewall, you may have to enable ICMP pings response so that the test actually works (details on how to do that is beyond the scope of this FAQ). You can disable it after the test is complete. If you can't make heads or tails of the report, post the report URL here (make sure you use the one containing "nil", or everybody will know your IP address).
Daytime vs Nighttime: If the lag only happens at around the same time (usually around 3:30-4pm, local time, when all the kids are out of school, and again after 5pm when the adults are out of work), the problem is likely due to your ISP as well, because they cannot handle the increase in load that all you kids had put on their equipment. Call them up and complain.
Check if it is your modem: If your neighbours aren't having Internet problems, it may be the modem that you are using. Your ISP may be able to help you troubleshoot that problem.
Check if it is the distance: According to the IP database, the oMS servers are located in Los Angeles, USA (west coast), MSEA servers are located in Singapore, and the other versions are in their respective countries. Please use a server that is much closer to your location. You can try to get a sense of how much it lags for you by pinging the respective website. You can also find the distance, Internet-wise, by trace-routing the website.
Note: For MSEA, please ping/traceroute the full address (including the www part).
Now that you have gone through the list, please post the details for the ping, traceroute, and DSLReport Line Quality test results so that we can verify that the problems are not located at these points.
Mini question: How do I ping or traceroute?
Go to the command line (Start->Run->type in "cmd" in Windows NT4/2k/XP/2k3/Vista, or "command" in Windows 95/98/98SE/ME), and type in (without quotes) "ping -n 100 (website here)". "(website here)" should be replaced with a high-capacity website like Yahoo, or Microsoft, or the intented website (without the http:// part). Allow the program to complete (it may take anywhere from 2 minutes to 9 minutes to complete). When it does, the last few line should look similar to this:
Code:
Ping statistics for 64.233.187.104:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 86, Lost = 14 (14% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 4059ms, Average = 60ms
Your statistics may differ from my faked report. The problem I see with this is that there is a very high packet loss. Depending on the games you play, the acceptable packet loss varies. For first-person shooters, 0% maximum, or it's just not fun getting killed all the time, even if you're the best FPS player. The Continuum/Subspace game requires you to run at most 12%. For MapleStory, I find that I can go as high as 5% before the game really degrades (especially with what seems like others KSing you). Also, a high ping average can contribute to laginess, since it measures the time it takes for the information to go from your computer to a remote location and back. "High" is relative, since it also depends on the distance between you and the server. The closer you are to that location, the lower the ping average should be.
For traceroute, it is similar to the ping command, so start a command line, but this time, type in "tracert (website here)".

From here, you can see that it takes me 14 hops to get to the MapleGlobal servers. The more hops there are, the more distant you are from the target, thus making it lag more easily. Sometimes, you can even see where the lag really starts.
[3.2.6] I need to port forward MapleStory to make it work or lag less! May I have the MapleStory IP-addresses and ports?
You will not see any difference if you do this.
Short answer: Port forwarding is for servers and server/client hybrids only. MapleStory is a client-only program.
Long answer: MapleStory uses TCP, which always uses a random port for initiating a communication on your end. There are no options in the game that allows you to choose your ports to eliminate the randomness either. Previous arguments have been made here.
Read the question [3.2.5] Are there any tips for troubleshooting lagginess to troubleshoot your lagging problems.
[3.2.7] May I have the MapleStory IP-addresses and ports?
PM me for them. Include the world you are in and a valid reason why you need them. The question is limited to the oMS region, as I do not have accounts on any other regions.

[3.2.9] I need help with Cash Shop.
Try looking at the threads in the Cash Shop??!?! subforum first. Hopefully the problem is already solved there. Permission to start a Cash Shop-related problem here is a bit fuzzy, since the description for that subform did say "All of your cash shop threads go here. NO WHERE ELSE END OF STORY".
[3.2.10] My arrow keys kept on triggering my shift key.
One poster (KirbyM) said that his problem was the NumLock being on. Turning it off helped him.
Another poster (omegaz) writes that it is the sticky keys. You can turn off the feature in the Accessibility control panel, or trigger it by pressing the left shift button 5 times or hold down the right shift button for 8 seconds.
[3.3.0] Installation Errors
[3.3.1] "The contents of this file couldn't be unpacked...."
Quote:
The contents of this file couldn't be unpacked. The executable you are trying to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of this file, verify it's integrity, and try again.
Conduct a quick scan (Windows 2k/XP/2k3/Vista only):
Go to the Start menu, then Run.... Type in "cmd" and press enter.
In the black window, type in "chkdsk /f c:" (without quotes) (change c: to the drive letter of your download directory; for example, if your download directory is C:\Downloads, the drive letter is C:).
If it asks whether you want to dismount the volume, answer no.
When it asks whether you want to schedule a check, answer yes.
Reboot your computer so that chkdsk can really do the work.
During startup, your system will undergo a 3-stage check. Allow it to finish. Depending on your used diskspace, it may take around 10 minutes to complete.
Once you are back on the desktop, redownload the client again.
If the above didn't fix anything, you might want to try a more thorough scan. The procedure is the same, except for #2. Use "chkdsk /r c:" and it will conduct a 5-stage check. It will take a lot longer time to complete (one member reported a 3-hour check).
Other ideas you can try:
Uninstall MapleStory that you have currently installed, if you haven't done so already. If you have other regions installed, make sure you uninstall the correct one. You can uninstall it via the Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Scan your computer with an antivirus software.
Use a different browser (Mozilla, Firefox, Opera; anything that doesn't use IE or IE objects. Use the instructions in [1.0.1] to get around the IE-only!! website).
Use a download manager (GetRight, ReGet, FlashGet, etc).
Download the 20-part rar files. If it says its corrupted, it should tell you which part is, and you can redownload that part.
Get a friend to download it for you and burn it on a CD.
[3.3.2] "Illegal System DLL Relocation"
Quote:
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\[random file] occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.
(adapted from marlkintass)
There is a conflict with two of the Windows patches (KB925902 and KB928843). Please follow these instructions to remedy this issue:
Head to KB935448 and download the hotfix (under "Download Information" section).
Save the file for later use. Don't install it just yet.
Head to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Near the top, make sure the "Show updates" is checked off.
Wait until the list is populated.
Near the bottom, there should be an entry called "Windows XP - Software Updates".
Look for the one called "Security Update for Windows XP (KB925902)". The installed date should be anytime after 2007/04/03. Make sure it is KB925902 labelled.
Click on it, then click "Remove".
You may be asked to restart. Do so.
Remember that downloaded hotfix from KB935448? Go ahead and install that now.
You may be asked to restart. Do so.
Since we have uninstalled an important patch, we have to reinstall it. Visit Windows Update and reinstall the KB925902 patch (should be in the "High Importance Update" section), or allow your Automatic Update to do the work.
Reboot once more for the patch to actually apply.
[4.0.0] INCA/nProtect/GameGuard
[4.1.0] INCA/nProtect/GameGuard Errors
[4.1.1] Error 114
This error reports that some program is blocking GameGuard from doing its job (let's not debate its effectiveness, m'kay?).
Make sure you have administrative privileges when starting the client, especially when they have updated their GameGuard.
Make sure you allow whatever GameGuard components complete access to your system. Things like OS Firewall (ZoneAlarm feature) or other antispyware programs may block it from installing the necessary driver on your system.
Linux users will encounter this error with Wine. Unfortunately, there is no fix for it at this time. Please see [1.0.3] for more details.
If you have encountered this error message, and then suddenly lost the ability to start any other programs (anything that is currently not running in the background), restart your computer. (Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to consistently trigger this problem, so the cause is unknown.)
Adapted from AdmiralKirk: This error is due to the combination of WinXP SP2, and NX or XD bit found in the latest processors that is incompatible with the initial release of patch v0.08. However, it has been fixed by 2005/10/19 12:30am GMT. Please allow GameGuard to update to the latest version.
If you are still having problems, check the "All other errors" question.
[4.1.2] Error 115 (adapted from a few SW.net members)
This error claims that GameGuard is still running, but you don't see it anywhere on the process list. A feature of GG is that it hides from the process list so that you can't find it. You can remove it from memory by either restarting the computer, or logging out and then back in again.
You will get this error message if you try to run two GameGuard games on the same computer at the same time. The simplest way to "fix" this is to use another computer. A harder way is to run one client in a virtual environment. Please see this thread for more details.
[4.1.3] Error 340
This error generally says that there is a problem communicating to the GameGuard server. Please follow these steps to pinpoint the source of the problem:
Check if there is a server check in progress. Sometimes, large patches may require Wizet to take down all their servers.
Check if you can access MapleGlobal using the browser. If you can't, you will most likely not be able to play anyway.
Check if you have a firewall running. If you do, allow GameGuard.des to connect to the Internet.
Check your network settings. Make sure you are able to connect to the Internet. Verify that your network settings have a proper default gateway rather than relying on a proxy to connect to the Internet.
[4.1.4] Error 350
This error happens when you click on the cancel button. Don't click on the cancel button! Have some patience.
[4.2.1] The retry button appears
One of the GameGuard servers doesn't respond to requests anymore. Follow these instructions for a chance of getting in a little faster.
Start->Run..., type in "cmd" for WinNT4/2k/XP/2k3/Vista or "command" for Win98/98SE/ME. Don't include the quotes.
In the black box, type in "ipconfig /flushdns". Again, no quotes.
Close the black box.
Click on "Retry".
[5.0.0] Sleepywood
[5.1.0] Sleepywood Problems
[5.1.1] How do I logout of Sleepywood?
In the main page of this forum, look for "Log Out <your name here>" near the bottom of the page. Some skins also has this line near the bottom of every page (I'm using "oivar legacy" and it does have it). If there is no logout link, close all instances of the browser (including other sites you are visiting while look at sleepywood) and reopen SW.net. If it still doesn't work, you should clear your cookies:
Mozilla Firefox
Go to the "Tools" menu then "Options".
Click on "Privacy".
Look for the "Cookies" line and click on that "Clear" button.
Reload the page. If it still doesn't work, redo it, but this time, close all instances of the browser after clearing the cookies.
Mozilla
Go to the "Tools" menu then "Cookie Manager" then "Manage Stored Cookies".
Click on "Remove All Cookies" and then "Close".
Reload the page. If it still doesn't work, redo it, but this time, close all instances of the browser after clearing the cookies.
Opera
Go to the "Tools" menu then "Advanced" then "Cookies...".
Manually select each cookie line and click on "Delete".
Reload the page. If it still doesn't work, redo it, but this time, close all instances of the browser after clearing the cookies.
Internet Explorer
Go to the "Tools" menu then "Options".
In the "Internet Options" box, click on "Delete Cookies..." (it should be in the middle box).
Click on "OK" twice.
Refresh the page. If it still doesn't work, redo it, but this time, close all instances of the browser after clearing the cookies.
If you are using other browsers, you will need to check the documentation that came with it.
[5.1.2] Whenever I visit Sleepywood, I get this blue screen that says COMMODORE like the one below, or a black screen.
The forum server is overloaded. Please try again later. Much much much much later.
[5.1.3] Sleepywood is so slow. All other web sites are instantaneous for me.
The forum server is overloaded. Do the admins a favour and don't hit the refresh button. If you have used the enhancements found in this thread undo them now, as those settings will do more harm to the server (you're more than welcome to reactivate them for other servers). If you are using the Fasterfox extension, switch the profile to "Courteous".
[5.1.4] Why can't I post in the free market?
New members have a probational period so that they can take the time to get to know the forum guidelines and free market rules. Please read it thoroughly for details on when this probation period is lifted.
[5.1.5] Why doesn't my post count go up?
The following forums do not count towards your post count:
Cash Shop
Screenshots and Fanart
Sleepywood Theatre
All World Specific Discussion forums
All Global Free Market forums
lol MapleStory
This is implemented to reduce spam posts that commonly infest some of these areas.
[5.1.6] Why can't I edit my posts?
The following forums do not allow posts to be edited:
Sleepywood Theatre
All Global Free Market forums except for each Personal Market subforum
This is implemented because of security reasons or to enforce the no editing rule.
[5.1.7] Why can't I close my posts?
Except for the free market, all the forums do not allow you to close/lock the thread due to possible abuse. For example, if an argument doesn't go well with the thread starter, he/she can "put his/her foot down" by closing the thread, thus killing off further discussions on the subject. That, obviously, is not the mature way of doing things.
Recently, the admins have also turned off free market closing/locking due to reopening abuse. Threads that violated the free market rules were locked by the mods, but were later reopened by the thread starter to continue their complete disregard for the rules. This cuts down on the mod's time to revisit these nusciances, but as collateral damage, it kills off your ability to close the thread as well. Please see this thread for further details.
[5.1.8] Why can't I post images and links?
Please check this announcement for details.
[5.1.9] Why can't I acess SW.net around October 13th?
This specific date is when the SW's domain name expires. However, as of this writing, the expiry date is in 2007, so somebody messed up somewhere and expired it prematurely. Regardless, you can fix this using a temporary solution found here. Please use the following list to find out which file you need to modify for your operating system:
Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista: %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows 95/98/98SE/ME: %windir%\hosts
Mac OSX: /etc/hosts (based on info from 10.4.1)
Linux: /etc/hosts
You may need administrative or super user privileges in order to modify the file.
Notes:
For those who are using an antispyware program, it may go nuts after you make this modification. You will need to allow it in order for it to work, or you will be back to square one.
Please check the site announcements for any thread asking for reversal on this modification. In the event that SW.net moves to a new server, people using this modification will not be able to access it again.

There's nothing more you can do now but wait. They probably won't even reply at all, but silently update the files on Wizet's server. You'll just have to check it once in a while to see if GameGuard updates itself.

Your video card is integrated on the chipset, so the video card drivers will be found in your motherboard's CDs. If you prefer to use the latest video card drivers, you will need to find your motherboard's model number and look it up against the list at Elitegroup Computer System.
ok can you help out my cousin he whas palying ms
all the time but now
he cant he gets that 114 error
and then he restarts his computer then it works
but now it doesnt work any more even if he restarts his computer
The only thing I can possibly think of is that your computer has another program running in the background that is incompatible with nProtect. Close down all non-essential programs (that includes your instant-messanging program and all of your system tray icons). The only things that should remain are the Windows services, your antivirus, antispyware and firewall programs.
appie, you haven't mentioned whether your cousin had checked out the "All other errors" part yet. Ask him whether he has already gone through the troubleshooting tips on the MapleGlobal website.
