Default Gunslinger Guide (Level 1-70) with 3rd & 4th job SP Builds

I wrote this guide originally for kMS, so most of the training areas don't exist on gMS yet. I'm assuming that Magatia will be released before Pirates are out, but until then, I'd be happy to listen to & incorporate any suggestions for training spots on gMS that I don't currently have listed.

Also, I guess the quests tip isn't as useful on gMS because quest EXP is significantly lower than it is on kMS.. But I'll leave it in there because I still think quests are in important part of the game.

If you're checking out this guide, you probably want to be a Gunslinger. GOOD CHOICE! Although our class does low numbers early on, the speed of each attack greatly makes up for it and the wide variety of original skills makes the Gunslinger an extremely fun class to play! A warning though, if you like seeing high damage, you should probably choose a different job. Although Gunslingers kill very fast and do good damage, we're not much of a flaunting class.. Until 3rd job! You'll start seeing some pretty decent damage come into play once you've a Valkyrie. You'll need a lot of patience to play a Gunner, but it will definitely pay off!

***Remember, all the builds, training areas and such are all just suggestions! You're definitely encouraged to be creative with your character; all of the information I'm providing here is only to help you train faster.

Well, let's get started then!

AP. AP Stats
As a Gunslinger, your primary stat is DEX and your secondary stat is STR, so you will want to roll the dice to get as close to 4 INT and 4 LUK as possible. The job advance at level 10 requires 20 DEX so you will want to raise that as quickly as possible, and afterward, keep your STR at the same level as your current level. (ie, if you're level 30, you should have 30 STR.) I would recommend adding 5 STR at levels x9 and x0 (ie, add 5 STR at level 29 and 5 STR at level 30.)

Because it's the secondary stat, STR should always be kept as low as possible. If you are able to receive STR from your equipment and still wear a level-appropriate weapon, do not add extra STR.

1a. Useful Information for First Job
As a first job Pirate, you will rely heavily on one-on-one attacks, as the only first job mob skill is a melee attack and Gunslingers are a ranged class. You are still able to use the mob skill (Somersault Kick) with a gun, but the damage will be a lot lower than your one-on-one damage with Double Shot.

A Gunslinger's damage during first job is very unstable. You will see many low numbers until you have maxed Mastery in second job. Your damage will eventually be a lot higher and more stable though, so it's nothing to worry about!

***DON'T FORGET TO DO YOUR QUESTS!!***
Quests are a big part of MapleStory and can help you get your EXP a LOT faster! Also they will help you greatly with potions early on!

2a. Useful Information for Second Job
In second job you will start off by increasing that horrible minimum damage you have! Once you have a nice level of Mastery built up you'll notice your damage becoming a whole lot more stable. Also a noticeable difference will be the type of attacking you will be doing. Unlike first job where you focused on one-on-one attacks, second job will utilize your mobbing skills to their full potential! After maxing Mastery you will want to max Invisible Shot very quickly as it will be your new main attacking skill, but don't expect to remove Double Shot from your keys yet. Double Shot is still a very useful skill in second job and will often be used to help create mobs.

Invisible Shot - Your new mob skill
Invisible Shot is a very useful and unique skill. It functions a lot like an Arch I/L Mage's Chain Lightning attack, in that it hits monsters one-by-one in succession. The most it will hit at any time is 3 monsters. The cool thing about Invisible Shot is its unique range. Although it doesn't reach as far as Double Shot horizontally, it hits monsters slightly above and below your character. This helps GREATLY if you're training in Magatia where the monsters walk below platforms where you can stand and easily spam Invisible Shot.

Recoil Shot
Recoil Shot is a really unique skill, but there's a few misconceptions about it, one being that it's spammable; it's not. Recoil Shot can be used about once every 2 seconds. Also, like FJ, the distance that the skill will shoot you backwards increases as you level it up more, so you'll have a lot more distance with level 20 BS than with level 1. The distance increases with every 4 SP you place into it.

3a. Useful Information for Third Job
Third job brings about a total transformation in the Gunslinger's fighting style. You'll now switch from Invisible Shot mobbing to one-on-one combat with Burst Fire with the aid of some great summons and a new skill to incapacitate your enemy. Because of this change in style, you'll begin to see some very high numbers as a Valkyrie instead of the usual low Gunslinger damage.

Gaviota and Ice Splitter
Many people have made guides in the past that want you to get Gaviota before Ice Splitter. It's a very bad idea. Gaviota removes the stun from Blank Shot when it drops a bomb on a stunned monster but it doesn't remove CE's freeze. Because of this, I recommend getting Ice Splitter before Gaviota so you'll have something to incapacitate the enemy with. UPDATE: Octopus also removes the stun. Ice Splitter is 100% required to effectively train with summons.

3b. SP Builds (70-120)

Jr. Newties Build
This build will allow you to train effectively on Jr. Newties starting at level 80. From 80 to 94 you will only be able to attack from the safe spot behind the rope because of your low level of Ice Splitter, but starting at level 94 you will have the option to train on the platform directly facing the middle grouping of Jr Newties. You'll be able to freeze the first Newtie and kill the first two.

Kentaurus Skill Build
This build will allow you to train on Red and Black Kentaurus in Riprey during 7x and 8x. Ice Splitter is maxed early to get the most benefit from mobbing these freezable monsters and Octopus is added immediately after CE for the extra damage addition and to prepare for higher leveled training. Using this build, you'll still have the option to train with Ice Splitter, Octopus, and Burst Fire at Jr. Newties at level 94, but it makes you more suited for training on Kents until that time. The EXP may not be as fast using this method, but it will probably be a lot more entertaining. Your final skill set will be the same as in the Jr. Newties build.

4. SP Builds (120+)
There's a lot of controversy over what skills are the best to raise first as a Captain. Here's a few possible builds to follow.

Key:
Red text = Maxed skill

For now, leave Battleship at level 1. There's a lot of speculation around what the best level is, and so far the common opinion is 1. I'll take this into consideration and change the guide when I feel it's appropriate.

Really though, to be honest, with 4th job you just have to make do with what you have. The above builds are only guidelines to show what the best possible builds would be, although they obviously won't be able to be followed 100%. Almost all of the Captain's fourth job skills are really useful, so it's easy to be unique in this particular aspect. :P

4. Credits!
This guide was written by me, Shrapnel of kMS Culverin / blitzkrieg on Adventures in kMS forums / Koano on Sleepywood forums. I'd like to give a big thanks to everyone in the Sleepywood guild for being totally awesome people and for helping me anytime I needed it. You guys are great. Also deserving a thank you is everyone who posted Valkyrie tips on Insoya.com, although they'll probably never read my guide, I would have been lost without all the information they've given me. A few more thank you's for the following people:

That's all, folks~!

Great guide! Although this part confuses me a bit.

I've been hearing that it takes 20 dex to do the advancement unless it was changed? Any confirmation on this or was it a typo.

great guide! I'll definitely be using this if I ever plan on creating a Gunslinger. They're quite a bit like bowmen; unstable damage during 1st job, primary stat is DEX, secondary is STR, mobbing a bit with AB in 2nd job, back to one-on-one action with Strafe in 3rd job.

Nice guide. I posted my own Gunslinger build on some other forum, and I would like to get some of your opinions since you have played a Gunslinger before.

Is Fire Burner really worthwhile? Gaviota seems like a more useful skill to me since it's useful everywhere, not just on Fire Weak mobs.

What about Element Amplification? Is it good to max it early? 200% damage on Cooling Effect seems really useful since it's used a lot. What does the +5% bullet damage mean though?

And what do you think of my 4th job build (up to level 150)?

OGM Spoiler!

Unless the damage does absolutely suck, I suggest 1 point of Somersault Kick at 11 to take care of mobs that overrun you.

I don't see the point in 30 Cooling Effect when it's not meant for damage. Fire Burner on the other hand is. Octopus seems to be coming in late too. During 7x, and 8x, a Valkyrie should be in places like Squid1. Fake Shot should be enough for Squid1. Even Squid2. Only issue would be Gobies, and even then, there's six of them so you'd be spamming Cooling Effect all the way until they all die. Even if you're going to Newties, Fake Shot would serve just as well, if not better. You're not going to be mobbing Newties. The only advantage Cooling Effect has over Fake Shot is 30 pixels in range and the ability to mob higher. (Unless it has some hidden shooting range and what I'm seeing is the impact area of effect) Otherwise, Fake Shot lasts longer. Especially at lower Cooling Effect levels.

Ah yeah, that's just a typo, my mistake. I'll fix it right away, lol.

Your build looks pretty solid to me, though I'd probably want to get Air Strike before Advanced Homing. In those levels, you'll be doing a lot more mobbing than one-on-one fighting (except at bosses), so Air Strike would prove more useful. Also, I don't think getting 1 Elemental Amp is necessary at level 120 because it hardly tacks on any damage or extra freeze time for Cooling Effect.. It's not a very good skill, lol.

As for Gaviota, I left it at 15 mainly because Air Strike COMPLETELY overpowers it at level 1.. So I figure you might as well get something that will at least last longer than a few levels :P

Somersault Kick's damage REALLY does suck, lol. Though I know of some people who opted to max it instead of Quick Motion.. In my opinion though, it's best to just leave it for your leftover points.

I chose to max Cooling Effect instead of Fire Burner because Fire Burner is a skill you won't really have any use for at all. Most of the high leveled mobs you'll want to train at are freezable, so obviously it would make more sense to get the freezing skill. Fire Burner wouldn't be useful there because of its low attack amount (160% at max level) and.. well, because it doesn't freeze. The damage over time it applies doesn't make up for the low attack when compared with Triple Fire, so there's really no time you'd be using it.

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the suggestion, I moved Advanced Homing + Air Strike around.

I still think Gaviota is more useful than Fire Burner. Even though Air Strike outdamages it, couldn't you still use it in between the cooldown? You could even make an Air Strike + Gaviota macro since they have the same cooldown :P Plus it's one of the few skills that can be used on Battleship. I really don't see how Fire Burner will be useful at all, except at Fire-weak places.

I think 1 AMP at 120 is a good idea. It increases Cooling Effect's freeze timer by 1 second, making it the same as Fake Shot. That 1 extra second of Freeze means 1 extra second of spamming Rapid Fire :D

PS: Does Air Strike 30 drop from Horntail? D=

Yeah, to be honest I think you're probably right about Gaviota being better than Fire Burner.. For some reason I was thinking that Air Strike was like Triple Fire, in that Triple Fire really -deletes- Double Shot and adds on more damage & an extra bullet. I figured that Air Strike would improve upon Gaviota in the same way, but turns out it's an active skill.. d'oh. I'll put your suggestion into my build. :P

Not sure really where any of the skills drop from yet.. I'll probably end up just buying mine anyway T_T..
