I can't believe people never learned about this in English class. Because of the fact you're pronouncing the letter M like "em" and not using it as part of a word like "maple", you use "an" in front of it instead of "a".

Actually An is correct. Distinction is phonetic, not literal and phonetically it's "em double-you el bee", therefore an is the appropriate prefix, not a.
